How the Magic Begins

Many people wonder how a project led by an Interior designer works, and more to the point if hiring one is worth it.

To shed some light on this issue, I will share with you the start of my process and how a designer's mind essentially works when faced with a new project.

I work from the ethos of 'let it be what it needs to be', and this is a reference to the intuitive nature of design. Not only are you solving a problem,

but you are also tapping into a feeling, a pull to what is behind and beyond...

it is almost as if you, as the designer, are acting as a conduit for the design that is already there.

Sound obscure? Maybe. But I feel my job as a designer is to be open and highly sensitive to this pull. As the work progresses, so the direction as allowed, more than dictated. There is a sense of knowing - when it is right, it is right.

My favourite types of interior projects are renovations.

They are the projects with the most 'designy' bits:

problems to be solved and opportunity for magic moments to be revealed.

So let's delve into our current beach home renovation project.

All projects start with a philosophy as a guiding point. This philosophy is derived from both the client brief and the actual place.

The one above, for this beach house renovation, has 3 guiding points for the design:

  • The transitions are both flimsy and definite.

This is in reference to both physical aspects of the house, and psychological flow. Because the home has a real 1970's feel (dating back to when it was built) it's essence does not lean towards a fully open-plan sensibility. There will be lovely flow, and lots of light, but with some parts of the house tucked away, revealing itself as you travel through it, and hence retaining it's sense of humility.

  • Artisitic sensibility is timeless and surprising.

This is something I work towards in all projects, and it basically means if you have an artistic and timeless approach, you will steer away from trends.

  • The luxury is the holiday living

This house does not need many bells and whistles to feel luxurious. It's outlook and beachy surrounds are the luxury.

These guiding points will be referred to constantly during the project, and

help to keep the decisions on track.

Once the design concept is fully fleshed out, the actual work on the physical ideas start, and it is all about interpreting the philosophies into the

physical realm, detail by detail.

Above is an example of a preliminary sketch of one area, giving a glimpse into the design idea and feel.
